Destin isn't just about deep-sea fishing; it's also a fantastic place to target Gulf Flounder. These flatfish are abundant in the shallow bays and grass flats surrounding the city. The best time to target flounder in Destin is during the fall migration, from September through November, as they move into the bays to spawn. However, they can be caught year-round. A productive technique is to slowly drag a live shrimp or mud minnow along the bottom using a Carolina rig or a jighead. Another effective method is gigging at night, especially around lighted docks and piers. Local tip: The Choctawhatchee Bay is a prime flounder habitat, accessible from numerous boat ramps around Destin. Be aware of the tides – flounder often congregate near points and channels during moving water. The flounder in this area tend to be good size, with many reaching several pounds.
