Gulf Flounder
Charleston, South Carolina, provides a unique setting for pursuing Gulf Flounder, with its intricate network of tidal creeks, estuaries, and shallow bays. The extensive spartina grass marshes surrounding Charleston are prime flounder habitat. While flounder are present throughout the year, the fall months (September-November) are particularly productive as they move towards the ocean to spawn. Focus your efforts around docks, oyster beds, and creek mouths, especially during periods of moving water. A local tip is to use a Carolina rig with a live mud minnow or shrimp. Another effective technique is to slowly drag a jig head with a soft plastic trailer along the bottom. Access to many of the best fishing spots is by boat, but there are also numerous public fishing piers and wading opportunities available. Be mindful of the strong tidal currents and oyster shells, which can be hazardous.
