Halibut

Kodiak's location on the Gulf of Alaska makes it a prime destination for Halibut fishing. These massive bottom-dwellers can be found in the deep waters surrounding the island, offering anglers the chance to land a true trophy. The best time to target Halibut is generally from May through September, when the weather is milder and the fish are actively feeding. Focus your efforts on areas with structure, such as underwater pinnacles, ridges, and drop-offs. Heavy jigs tipped with bait, such as salmon or herring, are a popular choice. A local tip: use a quality depth finder to locate promising areas and to present your bait effectively. Be prepared for a long fight, as Halibut are incredibly strong. The waters around Kodiak are known to hold some exceptionally large Halibut, often exceeding 100 pounds. Always check the regulations for size and bag limits before heading out.
