Halibut

Halibut fishing out of Anacortes provides access to some of the most productive grounds in the Puget Sound region. Focus your efforts on areas with relatively flat, sandy or muddy bottoms in depths ranging from 150 to 300 feet. Using heavy jigs or large baited hooks is the standard approach. Halibut season is typically open for a limited time in the spring and summer, so check the regulations carefully. A key piece of local knowledge: pay attention to tide charts, as halibut often feed more actively during periods of strong tidal flow. The area near Hein Bank, a well-known halibut hotspot, is within reach from Anacortes. Be prepared for a long day on the water and a tough fight, as these fish can reach impressive sizes.
