Islamorada, the 'Sport Fishing Capital of the World,' provides excellent hogfish opportunities, but requires a strategic approach. Unlike some areas where hogfish are caught incidentally, here they can be targeted specifically with success. The best time to fish for hogfish in Islamorada is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, when the water is clearer. Focus on the numerous patch reefs and wrecks that lie within casting distance of the shore or a short boat ride offshore. A key to success is using light tackle and a stealthy presentation. Hogfish are wary and easily spooked. Live shrimp is the bait of choice, fished on a small jig head or a Carolina rig. A practical tip: try fishing the edges of the reefs where they meet the sand. These areas often hold larger hogfish. Be mindful of the strong tides that can rip through the channels and adjust your tactics accordingly.
