Hybrid Striped Bass

Targeting hybrid striped bass near Alamo Heights presents a unique freshwater fishing challenge in the heart of the city. The San Antonio River and its associated lakes and reservoirs, though not traditionally known as prime hybrid striper habitat, do hold some stocked populations. These fish offer an exciting fight in an unexpected location. The best times to pursue them are spring (April-May) and fall (October-November) when water temperatures are moderate and the fish are actively feeding. Look for them near deeper channels and areas with current, especially near dams or bridges. A key to success is using sonar to locate schools of baitfish, as the hybrids will often be nearby. Remember that hybrid stripers are voracious predators, so using larger lures and live bait is often effective. Access to the river is plentiful, but be mindful of urban surroundings and practice responsible angling.
