Hybrid Striped Bass

While Briaroaks, Texas, might not be the first place that comes to mind for hybrid striped bass, you can find opportunities within a reasonable drive. Look to larger reservoirs within an hour or two's drive that are known to be stocked with hybrids. These larger bodies of water tend to have the open water and baitfish populations necessary to support a hybrid fishery. Spring and fall are peak seasons, as the hybrids follow schools of shad. Trolling crankbaits, casting swimbaits and slabs, and using live shad are all effective techniques. A local tip: check fishing reports for nearby lakes to get an idea of recent hybrid activity and locations. Look for areas with current or wind blowing into points, as these areas tend to concentrate baitfish. Before heading out, be sure to check the regulations for the specific lake you're targeting, as size and bag limits for hybrids can vary.
