Hybrid Striped Bass

Looking for a hard-fighting fish near Carthage? Hybrid striped bass, often called “hybrids” or “wipers,” offer an exciting angling opportunity in this region, and Lake Murvaul is a prime location to target them. These fish are a cross between striped bass and white bass, and they're known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Hybrids are stocked in Murvaul, creating a robust fishery. Spring and fall are the best times to fish for them, as they school up and chase baitfish. Look for them in open water, near points, and around the dam. Trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits can be very effective. Live bait, such as shad or shiners, is also a great option. A local tip: pay attention to bird activity; flocks of birds diving on baitfish often indicate the presence of feeding hybrids below. Also, these fish can be found near the discharge of the dam. Be sure to check size and bag limits before you fish, as they can differ from those for largemouth bass.
