These hard-fighting fish are stocked to control shad populations and offer a thrilling alternative to largemouth. Spring and fall are ideal, coinciding with their schooling behavior as they chase shad. Look for surface activity or use your fish finder to locate schools. Topwater lures, crankbaits, and swimbaits are effective. A popular technique is trolling with umbrella rigs. A key to success is to follow the birds, as they often indicate where schools of shad (and hybrids) are feeding near the surface. The hybrids in Grapevine Lake are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Access is readily available through several boat ramps around the lake, but be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends.
