Hybrid Striped Bass

Hybrid striped bass, often called “hybrids” or “wipers,” are stocked in some Texas lakes and reservoirs, and while Mertens itself doesn't have a major hybrid fishery, a short drive will get you to some potential hotspots. Check Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocking reports to see if any nearby lakes have recent hybrid stockings. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, when the water temperatures are moderate and the fish are actively feeding. Look for areas with current or wind, as hybrids often school up to chase baitfish. Trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits can be effective, especially around points and humps. Live shad is also a very effective bait when available. Be sure to check size and bag limits for hybrids in the specific lake you plan to fish, as these regulations can vary.
