Hybrid Striped Bass

Targeting Hybrid Striped Bass near Progreso Lakes presents a unique freshwater opportunity in South Texas. While not as widely known as other Texas fisheries, the local lakes and reservoirs, particularly Falcon Lake further upstream on the Rio Grande, offer a chance to tangle with these hard-fighting fish. Hybrids are stocked in some of these waters, creating a put-and-take fishery that can be very productive. The cooler months, from late fall through early spring, are prime time. The hybrids school up more readily then, chasing baitfish. Look for them near submerged structure or points. A local tip: Falcon Lake is known for its fluctuating water levels, so always check conditions before heading out. Also, live shad are the go-to bait, but crankbaits and swimbaits can also be effective, especially when covering water to locate active schools. Be prepared for a strong fight; hybrids are known for their powerful runs.
