Chasing king mackerel off Gulf Shores requires a focus on structure and bait. The numerous artificial reefs and natural bottom formations in the Gulf provide ideal habitat for these toothy predators. Peak season typically runs from late spring through early fall when the water warms and baitfish become abundant. Concentrate your efforts around areas like the Alabama Artificial Reef Zones and the deeper wrecks further offshore. A key piece of local knowledge is that kings often stage along the edges of shipping channels. When targeting them, use a combination of live bait, such as Spanish mackerel or bluefish, and artificial lures, such as spoons and diving plugs. Be sure to use wire leaders to prevent bite-offs. Trolling is the most effective method, but you can also try slow-trolling live bait around structure. Watch your electronics for bait concentrations, and adjust your depth accordingly.
