Point Clear provides a strategic launch point for pursuing King Mackerel in the Gulf. The key to success here lies in understanding the seasonal patterns of baitfish and water temperature. From late spring through early fall, as the water warms, king mackerel migrate closer to shore, following schools of menhaden, Spanish mackerel, and other forage fish. Focus your efforts around artificial reefs and natural structure just offshore. Trolling live bait is a proven method, but don't underestimate the effectiveness of trolling spoons or diving plugs. Pay close attention to depth finders and temperature gauges; kings often hold at specific depths. The waters off Point Clear can experience strong currents, so be prepared to adjust your trolling speed and presentation accordingly. Access is relatively easy from various public boat ramps around Fairhope and Point Clear, but be sure to check weather conditions before heading out.
