Lake Trout

Lake Trout are not found in the immediate vicinity of Rock Island, Illinois, as they require access to deep, cold freshwater lakes which are not typically available in saltwater or brackish environments. However, anglers sometimes pursue them in the Great Lakes tributaries further upstream. Lake trout fishing in Illinois is focused on the deeper waters and requires specialized techniques. Trolling with downriggers or lead core line is a common method to reach the depths where lake trout reside. Jigging with heavy spoons or tubes is also effective, especially when targeting fish near structure. A local tip is to monitor water temperatures closely, as lake trout prefer colder water. Look for areas with thermoclines or upwellings where cooler water is present. Lake trout in this region can be challenging to catch, but the reward is well worth the effort.
