Perch

While not the first species that comes to mind when thinking about the Mississippi River, Perch can be found in the backwaters and calmer areas around Rock Island. These panfish offer a fun and accessible fishing experience, particularly for families and novice anglers. Spring and early summer are ideal times to target Perch, as they congregate in shallower areas to spawn. Look for them near submerged vegetation, docks, and other structures that provide cover. Small jigs tipped with waxworms or minnows are highly effective. A simple bobber rig can also be productive. Access to these backwater areas is often best by boat, but some shoreline access is available in local parks. Be aware of the river's current, even in seemingly calm areas, and use appropriate weights to keep your bait in the strike zone. Perch are schooling fish, so if you catch one, there are likely more nearby.
