Perch

Yellow perch are a Chicago staple, and while their populations have fluctuated over the years, they still offer a fun and accessible fishing opportunity, especially in Lake Michigan. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, when perch move into shallower water to spawn or feed. Look for them near piers, breakwalls, and submerged structure. Small minnows, waxworms, or pieces of nightcrawler are the standard baits, fished on a small hook with a split shot or a perch rig. Montrose Harbor, Belmont Harbor, and Navy Pier are popular and easily accessible locations. Be aware of the daily bag limits and size restrictions, as they are strictly enforced. Also, check the water clarity, as perch tend to bite better in clearer water. A light-action rod and reel with 4-6 pound test line is ideal for perch fishing. Consider using a chum bag to attract perch to your fishing area.
