Largemouth Bass

New Britain might not be the first place that comes to mind for largemouth bass, but the area's numerous smaller lakes and ponds offer surprisingly good fishing. Shuttle Meadow Reservoir, a local favorite, is known for its healthy bass population. Spring and fall are the best times to target bass, as they move into shallower water to spawn or fatten up for the winter. During the summer months, focus on deeper water and areas with shade. Plastics, crankbaits, and topwater lures are all effective. A local tip: many of these lakes and ponds have limited access, so scout out potential fishing spots beforehand. Consider using a kayak or canoe to reach less accessible areas. The bass in these smaller bodies of water tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different lures and presentations to find what works best on any given day.
