Largemouth Bass

While West Haven is primarily known for its coastal location, don't discount the freshwater fishing opportunities for largemouth bass. Head inland a bit, and you'll find smaller ponds and reservoirs that hold bass. These smaller, often overlooked waters can be surprisingly productive. The best times to fish for bass here are during the spring spawning season and again in the fall when the fish are actively feeding before winter. Look for weed lines, submerged structure, and drop-offs. A local tip: try fishing the early morning or late evening hours, especially during the summer months, to avoid the heat and find active fish. Many of these ponds are accessible from the shore, but a kayak or canoe can significantly expand your reach. Be aware that some areas may have restrictions on boat types or require permits, so check local regulations before heading out. The bass in these smaller waters tend to be scrappy fighters, making for an enjoyable experience.
