Largemouth Bass

Stonington might be better known for its saltwater fishing, but don't overlook the freshwater largemouth bass opportunities. Local ponds and reservoirs, like those found within the Pachaug State Forest a short drive away, hold decent populations of bass. Spring and fall are prime times. During the spring spawn, focus on shallow coves and weed lines with spinnerbaits, crankbaits, or soft plastics. As summer heats up, bass move deeper, so switch to Carolina rigs, Texas rigs, or deep-diving crankbaits around submerged structure. Fall sees a resurgence of activity as bass feed heavily before winter. A local tip: many of these water bodies are best fished from a kayak or canoe, allowing you to access areas inaccessible from shore. Be aware of the regulations regarding boat launch permits and invasive species prevention. The bass in these waters tend to be scrappy, and while trophy-sized fish are less common, a patient angler can be rewarded with consistent action and a worthwhile day of fishing.
