Carbondale is a great base for pursuing largemouth bass in Southern Illinois, with several excellent lakes within a short drive. Cedar Lake is a popular choice, known for its clear water and healthy bass population. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, with pre-spawn and post-spawn periods offering some of the best action. During the spring, target shallow bays and coves with spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and soft plastics. In the fall, focus on deeper structure like points, humps, and ledges with jigs, Carolina rigs, and deep-diving crankbaits. Another option is Lake of Egypt, known for its warmer water and longer growing season. A local tip: Pay attention to water clarity, as Cedar Lake can be very clear, requiring finesse tactics and fluorocarbon line. Also, be aware of the potential for heavy boat traffic, especially on weekends. The bass in these lakes can be wary, so a strategic approach is key.
