Largemouth Bass

While East Hazel Crest isn't overflowing with massive lakes, the surrounding Cook County Forest Preserves offer several smaller lakes and ponds that can hold surprisingly good populations of largemouth bass. These smaller bodies of water often see less fishing pressure than larger, more well-known lakes. Targeting largemouth in these locations is best during the spring and fall months when water temperatures are moderate. Look for bass near weed lines, submerged timber, and any other available cover. Plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are all effective lure choices. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity. If the water is clear, use natural-colored lures; if it's murky, opt for brighter colors. Many of these ponds are accessible from shore, making them ideal for bank fishing. Largemouth in these smaller waters tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different presentations to find what they're biting on that day. These are public waters, so adhere to all posted regulations.
