Largemouth Bass

Hennepin, Illinois, offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing, primarily in the backwaters and sloughs connected to the Illinois River. These areas, like those found near the Hennepin Canal, provide ideal habitat with plenty of submerged vegetation and structure. Spring and fall are prime times to target bass here, as they move into shallower waters to spawn or feed before winter. For bank access, try the Hennepin Canal State Trail, which offers numerous points to cast from. When the river is high, be cautious of strong currents and debris. Local anglers often have success with spinnerbaits and plastic worms worked slowly around submerged logs and weed beds. The bass in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations.
