Largemouth Bass

South Holland provides access to some excellent largemouth bass fishing in the south suburbs of Chicago. The Little Calumet River and its associated sloughs and backwaters offer diverse habitat for bass. The Calumet system is known for holding some quality fish, and the presence of vegetation and structure makes it ideal for bass anglers. Spring and fall are the peak seasons. During the spring spawn, look for bass in shallow, protected areas. In the fall, they'll often be relating to deeper structure as they feed up for winter. A local tip: Plastic worms, jigs, and spinnerbaits are all effective lures. Focus your efforts around docks, weedlines, and fallen timber. The Calumet River can be accessed from numerous parks and boat launches, but be aware of the industrial history of the area and potential water quality issues.
