Northern Pike

Pike enthusiasts near South Holland, Illinois, have a few options to explore. While Lake Michigan might be the first thought, don't overlook the inland lakes and forest preserve waters. These can offer excellent pike fishing, especially during the cooler months. Spring and fall are prime times, as the pike are more active and aggressive. Look for weedy areas, drop-offs, and submerged timber, as these are all prime ambush points for pike. Large spinners, spoons, and crankbaits are classic pike lures, but don't be afraid to experiment with swimbaits or even large streamer flies. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. Many of the forest preserve lakes offer good bank access, but a small boat or kayak can allow you to reach more secluded areas. Be aware that pike can be sensitive to fishing pressure, so try to fish early in the morning or late in the evening for the best results. Also, handle pike with care, as they have sharp teeth and can be easily injured.
