Largemouth Bass

Delia, Kansas, while a smaller town, puts you in striking distance of some under-appreciated largemouth bass fishing. Prime locations are farm ponds and smaller lakes dotting the landscape. These can offer surprisingly good bass fishing due to less pressure than larger, more well-known reservoirs. Spring (pre-spawn and spawn) and fall are your best bets. Look for fish staging near shallow cover in the spring and ambushing prey in the fall as water temperatures cool. A local tip: many of these ponds are on private land, so always seek permission before fishing. Also, pay attention to recent rainfall; runoff can temporarily muddy the water, impacting visibility and bass activity. The bass here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and plastic worms are all good choices. Don't be afraid to experiment with retrieve speeds and lure colors to find what the fish are keying on.
