Largemouth Bass

If you're chasing largemouth bass in southeast Kansas, La Harpe offers some under-the-radar opportunities. The area is dotted with small lakes, ponds, and strip pits – remnants of the region's mining history – that can hold surprisingly large bass. These smaller bodies of water warm up quickly in the spring, making for excellent pre-spawn and spawning activity. Target shallow, weedy areas with spinnerbaits, crankbaits, or soft plastics. Summer can be tough as the water heats up, so fish early and late. Fall brings cooler temperatures and renewed activity as bass feed up for winter. A local tip: many of these spots are on private land, so always get permission before fishing. Also, be aware of submerged timber and other structure in the strip pits; they hold fish but can also snag your line.
