Largemouth Bass

Bass anglers visiting Lovelock might be surprised to find some decent largemouth fishing in this high desert environment. Rye Patch Reservoir, located just north of town on the Humboldt River, is the primary bass fishery. While it's not known for producing trophy-sized fish, Rye Patch offers consistent action for smaller to medium-sized largemouth. Spring and early summer are the best times to target bass as they move shallow to spawn. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation and rocky shorelines. Plastic worms, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective. The bass population here is relatively resilient, but the fish can be heavily pressured at times. A local tip: Wind can be a significant factor on Rye Patch, so be prepared to adjust your tactics accordingly. The west side of the reservoir typically offers more protection from the prevailing winds. Check water levels before you go as the reservoir's volume can fluctuate greatly.
