Don't let Margate City's coastal location fool you – there are freshwater largemouth bass opportunities nearby. While the immediate area is dominated by saltwater, venturing inland to the network of creeks and ponds around the Great Egg Harbor River can yield some surprisingly good bass fishing. These backwater areas offer a mix of vegetation and structure that bass love. Spring and fall are the prime times to target largemouth bass here, as they become more active with the moderating temperatures. Soft plastics, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective lure choices. Local tip: Access to some of these areas may be limited to small boats or kayaks, so plan accordingly. Also, be prepared for tidal influences in the lower reaches of the creeks.
