Largemouth Bass

If you're chasing largemouth bass in eastern New Mexico, San Jon offers a surprisingly good, albeit under-the-radar, fishery. Ute Lake, just a short drive north, is the main draw, and it's known for producing quality largemouth. Focus your efforts on submerged structure, rocky points, and weed beds, especially during the spring and fall months when bass are actively feeding. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and Texas-rigged plastics are all productive lure choices. A local tip is to pay close attention to water clarity, as it can vary significantly depending on recent rainfall. If the water is clear, try using more natural-looking baits and lighter line. Ute Lake State Park provides excellent access to the lake with boat ramps and camping facilities. The bass in Ute Lake often exhibit aggressive behavior, so be prepared for some exciting strikes. Don't overlook the smaller coves and backwaters, as these can hold some hidden gems.
