Largemouth Bass

If you're looking to tangle with some largemouths in southeastern North Carolina, Cerro Gordo offers some under-the-radar opportunities. Focus your efforts on the Lumber River and its adjacent backwaters and oxbow lakes. These tannin-stained waters hold good numbers of bass, though they can be a bit finicky. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass are actively feeding during these periods. During the summer months, early morning and late evening are your best bets. For bank access, try the public access points along the Lumber River State Park. A Carolina rig with a dark-colored worm can be deadly in these waters. Be aware that the water levels can fluctuate, so check conditions before you head out.
