Largemouth Bass

Western North Carolina, including the Franklin area, isn't typically known for trophy Largemouth Bass, but you can still find some quality fishing if you know where to look. Focus your attention on Fontana Lake and Nantahala Lake. Fontana, with its deep, clear waters and abundant structure, holds a healthy population of Largemouth. Nantahala Lake is smaller and shallower, offering a different fishing experience. Spring and fall are the most productive seasons. During the spring, target shallow coves and points as bass move in to spawn. In the fall, look for them around submerged timber and rocky bluffs as they feed before winter. Local anglers often have success with Carolina-rigged worms and crankbaits in deeper water. Remember that Fontana Lake can be challenging due to its size and depth, so using a fish finder is crucial to locate structure and fish. Boat ramps are available at various locations around both lakes, but be prepared for potential crowds, especially on weekends.
