Largemouth Bass

The mountain streams and small lakes surrounding West Jefferson, NC, offer a different flavor of largemouth bass fishing than you might be used to. While not known for trophy bass, these waters hold a healthy population of largemouth that are eager to strike. The New River, though primarily known for trout, also holds some bass in its slower sections and backwaters. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass are actively feeding before and after the colder months. Try fishing around submerged structure like fallen trees and rock piles. A local tip: Ponds on private land (with permission, of course) often hold surprisingly good bass populations. Because of the cooler climate and limited forage base, the bass here tend to be smaller, averaging 1-3 pounds, but they fight hard in the clear mountain water. Consider using smaller lures and lighter line to increase your success rate. Access to the New River is available at several public access points along its course.
