Largemouth Bass

Northeast Ohio might not be the first place that comes to mind for largemouth bass, but Chardon offers some surprisingly good fishing in its smaller lakes and ponds. While you won't find massive reservoirs here, the numerous glacial lakes and smaller impoundments provide a more intimate and often overlooked bass fishing experience. Spring and early summer are excellent times to fish, as the bass are actively spawning and feeding in the shallows. Spinnerbaits and shallow-diving crankbaits are effective during this period. Later in the summer, target deeper weed lines and structure with jigs and Texas-rigged plastics. A local tip: Many of the smaller lakes are accessible from shore, but a small boat or kayak can open up a lot more water. Check local regulations regarding boat launches and horsepower restrictions. Chardon's largemouth bass population tends to be healthy, with a good mix of sizes, though trophy fish are less common than in larger bodies of water. Focus on areas with good cover and structure to increase your chances of success.
