If you're looking for largemouth bass in central Ohio, Coshocton County offers some under-the-radar opportunities. The area's numerous smaller lakes and ponds, often associated with the Muskingum River watershed, can hold surprisingly good populations of largemouth. Think farm ponds and smaller community lakes rather than huge reservoirs. Spring (late April-May) is prime time, as the bass move into the shallows to spawn. Fall (September-October) can also be productive as they feed up for winter. A key local tip is to focus on areas with submerged timber or weed edges; these provide excellent cover. Bank fishing is common, but a small boat or kayak can open up more water. Be aware that many of these smaller bodies of water may have limited access or require permission from landowners, so do your research beforehand. The largemouth here aren't known for trophy size, but you can expect to find a healthy population of fish in the 1-3 pound range.
