Northern Pike

While not a premier pike destination, Coshocton County does offer some opportunities to tangle with northern pike. Focus your efforts on larger bodies of water connected to the Muskingum River system, such as some of the deeper reservoirs or backwater areas. These fish prefer cooler water, so early spring (as soon as the ice melts) and late fall are generally the most productive times. Pike will often be found near weed beds or submerged timber, waiting to ambush prey. A steel leader is essential, as their teeth are razor sharp. A local's secret is to try fishing large swimbaits or crankbaits near creek mouths that feed into the main lake or river. Be prepared for a thrilling fight if you hook into one, as these fish are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. While trophy pike are rare, you may encounter fish in the 3-5 pound range, with the occasional larger specimen.
