Largemouth Bass

Coal Center, Pennsylvania, provides access to some excellent largemouth bass fishing. The Monongahela River, or "Mon" as the locals call it, is the main draw here. This navigable river system offers a variety of habitats, from shallow weedy flats to deeper channels and backwater areas, all holding largemouth. The spring and fall are peak seasons, as the bass become more active with the cooler water temperatures. Look for largemouth around docks, fallen trees, and weed lines. Flipping jigs and plastics into heavy cover is a productive technique. Don't overlook the backwater sloughs and creeks that feed into the Mon; these can hold some surprisingly large bass. Access can be found at various boat launches along the river, but be aware of barge traffic. The bass in the Mon are known for being aggressive, but water clarity can fluctuate, so be prepared to adjust your lure selection accordingly.
