Northern Pike

Pike fishing near Coal Center centers around the Monongahela River. While not abundant, northern pike are present and can offer some exciting action. Focus your efforts in areas with submerged vegetation, backwater sloughs, and creek mouths where pike ambush prey. Spring, just after ice-out (if any), and fall are prime times to target them, as they become more active in cooler water. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures, as are large live or dead baits fished under a bobber. Steel leaders are a must, as pike have sharp teeth. Be prepared for some hard strikes and powerful runs. Access the river via public boat launches and look for areas away from heavy boat traffic. The pike in the Mon aren't typically giants, but you have a chance at fish in the 30-inch range. Patience and persistence are key.
