Largemouth Bass

Markleysburg, nestled in the Laurel Highlands, provides a different setting for chasing largemouth bass than many might expect in Pennsylvania. While not known for sprawling lakes, the smaller reservoirs and ponds in the area, such as those within Ohiopyle State Park and nearby private lakes, offer surprisingly good bass fishing. The warmer months, from late spring through early fall, are prime time. As the water warms, bass become more active and move into shallower areas to spawn and feed. A key to success here is understanding the structure of these smaller bodies of water. Look for submerged timber, weed beds, and rocky outcrops. Because the water tends to be clear, especially in the highland reservoirs, using fluorocarbon line can be advantageous. Also, be mindful of access; some ponds are on private property and require permission to fish. The Youghiogheny River Lake, a short drive away, is a larger option with boat ramps and more extensive bass habitat.
