Smallmouth Bass

If you're chasing bronzebacks in southwestern Pennsylvania, Markleysburg offers some fantastic smallmouth bass fishing. The Youghiogheny River, particularly the section below the Youghiogheny River Lake, is a prime spot. The tailwaters provide consistent flows and cool temperatures that smallmouth love. Early fall, when the crowds thin out and the water cools, is arguably the best time, but late spring after the spawn can also be very productive. For bank access, try the areas around the Ohiopyle State Park. If you're launching a boat, the Mill Run boat launch provides good access to the river. Be aware that the Youghiogheny can experience significant fluctuations in water levels due to dam releases, so check the water release schedule before you go. The smallmouth here are known for their aggressive strikes and strong fights, often holding tight to the rocky bottom. Using crayfish imitations or tubes dragged along the bottom is a reliable tactic.
