Largemouth Bass

If you're chasing largemouth bass in the South Carolina foothills, West Union offers a gateway to some fantastic fishing on Lake Jocassee and Lake Keowee. These clear, deep lakes are known for their healthy populations of largemouth bass, as well as spotted bass and smallmouth bass. Spring and fall are generally considered the best times to fish, as the bass are actively feeding in preparation for spawning or winter. During the warmer months, focus on deeper water structure such as drop-offs, points, and submerged timber. A popular tactic is to fish Carolina-rigged worms or crankbaits along these structures. The public boat ramp at Devils Fork State Park provides excellent access to Lake Jocassee. Be aware that the water clarity is exceptional, so using fluorocarbon line can be advantageous. The largemouth bass in these lakes can grow to impressive sizes, with fish over 8 pounds being a realistic possibility. Many anglers also find success fishing topwater lures early in the morning or late in the evening.
