Largemouth Bass

If you're heading to Belle Haven, Virginia in pursuit of Largemouth Bass, focus your attention on the freshwater reaches of the nearby waterways and creeks that feed into the Chesapeake Bay. The Eastern Shore's unique blend of tidal influence and freshwater habitats creates ideal conditions for bass. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass move into shallower waters to spawn (spring) and feed aggressively before winter (fall). Look for submerged vegetation, lily pads, and fallen timber, as these provide excellent cover. A local tip: try launching from one of the smaller public access points along the creeks; a kayak or small boat will allow you to reach the more secluded, productive areas. The bass here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to soft plastics, can be effective.
