Largemouth Bass

Colonial Heights, Virginia, is a fantastic base for targeting largemouth bass in the tidal James River and its tributaries. The river offers a complex system of lily pads, submerged vegetation, and creek mouths that provide ideal habitat for bass. Spring and fall are prime times, with pre-spawn and post-spawn activity in the spring, and aggressive feeding in the fall as bass prepare for winter. A key tactic is to fish the edges of the lily pads with weedless lures or topwater baits. Also, don't overlook the Appomattox River confluence; the varying currents and structure here create excellent ambush points. For access, the Hopewell City Marina provides a convenient boat launch, and several smaller parks along the river offer bank fishing opportunities.
