Largemouth Bass

Damascus, Virginia, nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, might not be the first place that comes to mind for largemouth bass, but the small lakes and ponds scattered around the area hold some surprisingly good fishing. South Holston Lake, though partially in Tennessee, is a short drive and offers a good largemouth population. The best time to target largemouth in these waters is during the spring spawn and again in the fall as the water cools. Smaller soft plastics like worms and lizards, fished slowly around submerged structure, are often effective. Local tip: pay attention to water clarity, as these bass can be line-shy in the clear mountain waters. Early morning and late evening are typically the most productive times. Access to some of the smaller ponds may require permission from landowners, so always be respectful of private property. While you might not catch a trophy, the secluded beauty of the surroundings makes for a rewarding fishing experience.
