Largemouth Bass

Central Virginia, near Dillwyn, offers some fantastic largemouth bass fishing, particularly in the numerous smaller lakes and ponds dotting the landscape. These aren't massive reservoirs, but rather intimate fishing holes that can produce some real lunkers. Prime time is spring, during the pre-spawn and spawn (March-May), when bass move shallow. Fall (September-November) is also excellent as they feed aggressively before winter. Consider targeting the abundant lily pads and submerged timber with Texas-rigged worms or spinnerbaits. For bank access, try the public areas of Briery Creek Lake, known for its healthy bass population; a state fishing license is required. A local tip: many of these ponds are clearer than larger reservoirs, so downsize your line and use natural-colored baits for better success.
