Largemouth Bass

If you're chasing largemouth in central Virginia, Lake Anna near Mineral should be on your radar. This sprawling reservoir, known for its warm-water discharges from the North Anna Nuclear Generating Station, creates a unique environment where bass are active for a longer season than in other Virginia lakes. Spring and fall are prime times, with the pre-spawn and post-spawn periods offering excellent opportunities. However, the warm water keeps the bite going even in winter months. Look for bass around the numerous docks, submerged timber, and rocky points that characterize the lake. A local tip: the 'hot side' of the lake (closer to the power plant) often holds larger fish, especially during colder periods. Public access is available at several boat ramps around the lake, but be aware that Lake Anna can get crowded on weekends, so plan accordingly. The largemouth in Anna are known for their aggressive strikes and willingness to hit a variety of lures, from crankbaits to soft plastics.
