Claytor Lake, a nearby reservoir, is another popular destination, offering a different fishing experience with clearer water and deeper structure. Spring and fall are generally considered the best times for largemouth, as they are actively feeding in preparation for spawning and winter. Summer can also be productive, especially during early morning or late evening hours. For the New River, consider using crankbaits and spinnerbaits in the faster currents. In Claytor Lake, try fishing deeper with Carolina rigs or jigs. Public access to both the river and lake is readily available through boat ramps and parks.
