Largemouth Bass

Surry, Virginia, offers some excellent freshwater largemouth bass fishing, primarily in the numerous ponds and smaller lakes scattered throughout the county. These waters, often surrounded by farmland and timber, provide diverse habitat including lily pads, submerged timber, and shoreline vegetation that bass love. Spring is prime time, as the bass move shallow to spawn, making them aggressive and easier to target. Fall is also productive as they feed heavily before winter. A local tip is to focus on the tidal creeks that feed into the larger bodies of water; these can hold some real lunkers, especially during periods of higher water. Access can be limited to private property in some areas, so always check for posted signage or obtain permission. Many of the smaller ponds can be fished effectively from the bank, but a small boat or kayak will allow you to cover more water and reach those secluded hotspots. The bass in this region tend to be relatively healthy and well-fed, so don't be afraid to throw larger swimbaits or crankbaits.
