Largemouth Bass

While Ellensburg isn't immediately known for largemouth bass, several smaller lakes and ponds in the surrounding area offer decent bass fishing opportunities. These smaller bodies of water, often overlooked, can provide a productive day on the water. Places like Mattoon Lake and some of the ponds near the Yakima River can hold some decent-sized bass. Spring is an excellent time, as the bass are spawning and actively feeding in the shallows. Target areas with vegetation and submerged structure. Topwater lures, plastic worms, and crankbaits are all effective. A local tip: Try fishing early in the morning or late in the evening, especially during the warmer months, as the bass tend to be more active during these times. Be aware that some of these lakes may have limited access, so it's best to research before you go. Also, the Yakima River Valley can get quite hot in the summer, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Consider the wind as well; it can pick up strongly in the open areas.
