Largemouth Bass

Hamilton, Washington, though small, offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing within a short drive. The Skagit River and its sloughs provide the most accessible fishing. While the Skagit itself is best known for salmon, the backwater sloughs and connected lakes, like nearby Clear Lake, hold decent populations of largemouth. Spring (late April-May) is prime time, as the bass are actively spawning in the shallows. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation and fallen timber. Early mornings and late evenings are generally the most productive. For bank access, try the public areas along the Skagit near Hamilton, but be mindful of private property. A small boat or kayak is ideal for exploring the sloughs and accessing more remote spots. Local tip: water levels in the Skagit fluctuate significantly, so check river gauges before heading out to ensure safe and productive fishing. The largemouth here aren't giants, but a 3-4 pounder is definitely possible.
