Largemouth Bass

While Index, Washington, nestled in the Cascade foothills, isn't typically the first place that comes to mind for largemouth bass, the quieter waters off the Skykomish River's main channel and some of the smaller, connected sloughs can hold surprises. These areas offer the warmer, slower-moving water that largemouth prefer, although the fishery is limited. Spring (late April-May) is your best bet, as the bass move into shallower areas to spawn. Early mornings and late evenings will be most productive. A practical tip: Access can be tricky. Look for established trails leading to the river's edge from public land, or consider launching a small kayak or canoe from a safe access point further downstream and paddling upstream. Be mindful of the river's flow, especially during snowmelt. The largemouth here tend to be smaller, but the solitude and scenic beauty more than make up for it. Focus on areas with submerged logs or overhanging vegetation, using weedless lures or topwater baits.
